Entering the Measurements in Garment Designer

There are several approaches to entering custom measurements in Garment Designer. They are:

  1. You may start with a Standard Size, and edit certain measurements to customize that size more to your body.
  2. You may build a custom Simple-Fit sloper, entering only the 12 required measurements for the sloper.
  3. You may build a custom Refined-Fit sloper by entering the full realm of measurements.
  4. You may build a custom Semi-Refined sloper, entering only the additional measurements you consider necessary for your body shape, and the level of fit you desire to achieve. In other words, you will only pick and choose which additional Total or Average measurements you want, and within those, you may choose whether to add further Left/Right or Front/Back information. Garment Designer will allow this approach, and leaves it up to you to determine what works best with them.

Customizing a Standard Size Sloper
The simplest approach to building a custom sloper is to start with a Standard Size sloper, and edit certain measurements to customize that size more to your body. To do this:

  1. Choose the standard size closest to your personal measurements.
  2. Go to the Sloper menu and choose the Edit submenu. This will put you in Simple-Fit mode. Here you can see the body measurements that build this sloper.
  3. Type in the name of your new sloper at the top of the window.
  4. Edit measurements as necessary to achieve your fit. If you want to add additional measurements, you will need to request the Refined-Fit sloper by clicking on the Switch to Refined-Fit button.
  5. When you are through, click on the OK button to approve all the measurements and close the window.
  6. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save submenu from the Sloper menu.

Building a New Simple Sloper
Use this approach when you want a Simple-Fit sloper, and are willing to invest the time to take and record your own measurements.

To do this:

  1. On the Sloper menu, click New Simple Fit. A dialog window opens.
  2. Type in the name of your new sloper at the top of the dialog window.
  3. Work your way one by one through the various measurements and enter your personal measurements in the appropriate places.
  4. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.
  5. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save command from the Sloper menu.

Building a Refined Sloper (Complete)
Use this approach when you want a Refined-Fit sloper, and are willing to invest the time to take and record all your body measurements. This method will provide you with the best fit, but requires additional time and effort in measuring, inputting the measurements and patternmaking.

To do this:

  1. On the Sloper menu, choose the New Refined Fit command. A dialog window opens.
  2. Type in the name of your new sloper at the top of the dialog window.
  3. Click on all the check boxes, to open up all the measurement fields.
  4. Work your way one by one through the various measurements and enter your personal measurements in the appropriate places.
  5. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.
  6. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save command from the Sloper menu.

Building a Refined Sloper (Partial)
Use this approach when you want a Refined-Fit sloper, and are willing to take the time to measure and input some, but not all of the additional measurements. Many people only need to add a few of the additional measurements to achieve a good fit, so this method is for them. Since Garment Designer will allow you to omit certain measurements (and it therefore averages or adds for you), you can bypass some of the customizing. This method will provide you with a better fit, and depending upon which measurements you allow to be averaged, patternmaking may be somewhat simpler.

To do this:

  1. On the Sloper menu, click New Refined Fit. A dialog window opens.
  2. Type in the name of your new sloper at the top of the window.
  3. Work your way one by one through the various measurements and enter your personal measurements in the appropriate places. You must make sure that you have measurements in all the Total and Average fields in the measurements on the left side of the dialog (i.e. those that allow you to enter Left/Right and Front/Back measurements).
  4. Click OK to approve all the measurements and close the window.
  5. Save the Sloper by selecting the Save command from the Sloper menu.
