Simple Versus Refined Fit Slopers
The Simple-Fit Sloper requires 12 measurements and provides a fit that is simple and symmetrical. Use this for projects where styles are relatively non-structured. The patterns will be easy to create and the thought-challenge one deals with in patternmaking is relatively minor. You may still add darts to Simple Sloper styles to make them more body conforming, so you are not limited to baggy, straight styles.
The Refined-Fit Sloper requires up to 36 measurements and provides better fit for bodies that are not symmetrical. Use this to improve fit for non-symmetrical bodies and to allow for a better fit in the armhole and sleeve areas. Realize however, that the patterns you create will require more cross-checking. Realize also, that the front and back will not be the same (or possibly the left vs. right). It takes some time to get used to seeing patterns that actually accommodate your body's shape. Commercial patterns do not do this by default. Although you will be required to think more when you use Refined Fit Slopers, you will find that the trade-off is there. No longer will you need to make the same adjustments to every pattern you design. Once your body measurements are saved in the Custom Sloper file, you should never have to make the same set of pattern alterations to each and every garment you create. The Custom Refined Sloper takes care of a lot of this for you.
