Units/Gauge/Sett/Count   U Universal mode
This is a command that will appear differently dependent upon the mode you have chosen to work in. A second submenu will allow you to input your units, gauge, sett or count per inch or per 10 cm (or other setting as appropriate). Garment Designer will require a gauge in order to provide you with Pixel-Per-Stitch Graphics or Shaping Instructions. When you request a Pixel-Per-Stitch Graphic, a bit-mapped or graphic shape of the garment will appear. In this garment, each inch (or 10 cm) will be represented by the number you entered in your units/gauge/sett/count. See below for further explanation.

In Sew mode, you will see the Units command. Sewers may choose to enter a units setting of e.g. '8'. This will allow you to create a graphic in which every 8 pixels equals one inch. You may copy this graphic to the clipboard and take it to another graphics program. If you import it into a grid design program (e.g. Stitch Painter) each square on the screen will represent 1/8 of an inch and now you can do space-planning for engineered garments. Quilters will enjoy designing piecework in such an environment. If you import the graphic into a standard paint program, the image may not be large enough to draw on in which case it will be necessary to resize the graphic.

In Knit mode, you may use the Knit command to input the gauge of your yarn as per your test swatch. The arrowhead to the right of the command indicates that there are various submenus to choose from. When you select the command, you must choose one of the following submenus:
Per inch - enter the units wide per inch (stitches) and the units tall per inch (rows).
Per 10 cm - enter the units wide per 10 cm (stitches) and the units tall per 10 cm (rows).
40/60... - enter the cm per 40 stitches wide and per 60 rows tall (used by machine knitters).
30/40... - enter the cm per 30 units wide and per 40 units tall (used by machine knitters, intermediate gauge machines).
20/30... - enter the cm per 20 stitches wide and per 30 stitches tall (used by machine knitters).
When you want to create a graphic or shaping instructions, it is necessary to input the gauge prior to requesting the graphic/shaping instructions. As always, the greater the accuracy of your test swatch gauge, the better results you will get in your finished garment. Be particularly cautious of chunky gauges as a small error magnifies itself greatly.

In Universal mode, the Units/Gauge/Sett/Count command allows you to input the units (sewing) gauge (knitting), sett (weaving) and count (canvas work) of your project. The arrowhead to the right of this command indicates that there are various submenus to choose from. When you select this command, you must choose one of the submenus as discussed above.

When you want to create a graphic or shaping instructions for your project, it is necessary to input the gauge/count/sett from your sample swatch or canvas. As always, the greater the accuracy of your measurement, the better the fit of your finished garment.

Tip for Sewers:
If you want to space plan the fabrication of your garment, use the Universal Craft mode and gauge.
Set your 'gauge' to 8 units wide and 8 units tall and then create a graphic for export, every 8 pixels in the graphic represents one inch of your garment. If you have a graphing program such as Stitch Painter, you can space plan on the enlarged garment so as to lay out piecework, appliques, etc.
