Yarn Data (Options Menu)
Modes K U
The Yarn Data command allows you to enter information about your yarn. The upper part of the dialog box allows you to record the yarn's name and which needle size (if hand knitting) or tension size (if machine knitting) you are using. This information is optional, but will be useful if you want yarn info to appear on your Shaping Instructions or other reports.
- If you want Garment Designer to assist you in calculating how much yarn you will need for a project, you will need to fill in either the Stitches/Yards (or Meters) fields or the Stitches/Ounces (or Grams) field. You only need to fill in the information in the form for which you want calculations to be given. Both are not necessary. You are the one who decides how many stitches to knit, but the larger the test swatch, the more accurate the results.
- If you are using the yarn length method, measure off a length of yarn first, and knit it in the same technique you plan to use. When the measured amount is used up, count how many stitches you were able to create and enter this information in the first field.
- If you are using the weight method, and don't have a scale that weighs small increments, weigh your yarn, then knit a swatch of decent size. Weigh your yarn after knitting and determine the amount used up. Calculate how many stitches you knit. Enter this information in the dialog box in the appropriate text box. If your scale can easily weigh a small swatch, simply determine how many stitches you knit and weigh the swatch. Enter the information.
To view your results, choose the Yarn Calculations command from the Generate menu.
Always add extra (e.g. 10%) to your results to allow for human error.
